AST Turbo AG has been recertified for ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 by SQS for a further three years.
In a detailed audit the effectiveness of the management system has been verified.
The audit performed in November by SQS demonstrated that our management system supports the company in a very effective and appropriate way.
Health and Safety is a crucial part of our services. In March 2018, occupational health and safety management systems got a global upgrade with the publication of a new International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard.
Thus, the new generation of safety standards ISO 45001 replaces the former reference for workplace health and safety OHSAS 18001. The audit performed for the first time in compliance with ISO 45001:2018 discovered no relevant shortcomings.

The end of the year is already close. An exceptional and demanding year is behind all of us. The corona pandemic has kept the world on its toes and continues to do so.
It is no secret that also AST Turbo was heavily impacted by the ever-changing restrictions. While we normally have the capability to flexibly dispatch our experts to the remotest areas safely, we were suddenly challenged with unprecedented hurdles. More often than desired we could not cover all mobilization requests despite enormous efforts. Being locked down to the home locations we have continued to provide remote support to our customers as best possible and used the free time to enhance our internal systems. We also decided to invest time and money in our technical support system (TSS) and new technologies such as lean management techniques for turnarounds, advanced measurement technology (AMT), and a smartphone app to simplify reporting. At the same time we have continued to grow and strengthen our team. We are confident to have undertaken steps in the right direction to be ready for a 2021 that most certainly will bring its own challenges.

The outage of a nuclear power plant is usually a big deal. Hundreds of maintenance specialists are called to service the facilities. In times of COVID-19 this is no simple task. Among other things, it is difficult to source the necessary skilled workers from abroad. Most nuclear plants in Switzerland had to react and shortened their annual maintenance activities.
The nuclear plant in Beznau in Northern Switzerland has decided differently: The annual outage of Unit 1 started as originally planned. In view of the border closings this was controversial but the activities could not be postponed because of refuelling requirements. Since 1st June 2019, Unit 1 has produced more than 2.8 billion kWh of electricity, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of around 600’000 households.
The focus of the activities includes maintenance work, periodic inspections, commissioning of new systems as well as integral system tests. Of total 121 fuel elements 20 will be replaced.
During this year’s outage in these challenging times, the Beznau employees are supported by around 400 external specialists from Switzerland as well as from neighboring countries. AST Turbo supports the main turbine maintenance activities with a team of specialists.
To protect own and external staff, rigorous safety measures were applied to ensure that the virus does not spread among workers. Among other measures, this is reflected by careful health checks, access procedures and in the execution of work.

We are pleased to announce the hiring of Brian McKenzie as Managing Director for AST Turbo USA Inc. effective March 16th, 2020.
Brian McKenzie has over 30 years of professional experience in the turbomachinery service business. His experience includes responsibilities within Sales and Marketing, the aftermarket and OEM service business within Sulzer, Mitsubishi Compressor International and most recently MAN Energy Solutions.
AST Turbo possesses strong technical knowledge and experience in servicing critical rotating machinery. We are confident that with Brian McKenzie’s leadership, our US Team will deliver great value and support to our US customers.
Brian will be headquartered in Houston, TX and collaborate closely with Sam Blaser, CEO of AST Turbo AG. Hans Buob will continue in his role as Operations Manager.
